In 2016, Denver Public Schools (DPS) received a two year grant from the Colorado Health Foundation (CHF) to increase physical activity across the district. The Whole Child, Healthy Child Agenda 2020 has an objective to increase the amount of student physical activity before, during and after school. The performance metrics to reach that objective are:
- 75% of schools offer physical activity opportunities before school.
- 75% of teachers will use an in-class movement structure during the school day.
- 100% increase in the number of after school programs that incorporate physical activity.
The CHF grant directive was to pilot different strategies in five schools and identify best practices and resources that could support the entire district to meet the Whole Child, Healthy Child Agenda metrics. Based on the experiences over the past two years, this website aims to provide schools with the most useful tools and techniques to increase physical activity at every school to the desired amount of 60 minutes throughout the school day.
